Prapela's SVS hospital bassinet pad granted $200,000 to support regulatory clearance for neonatal abstinence syndrome.
CONCORD, MA – September 3, 2019 – Prapela, Inc. has been awarded $200,000 in the Milestone Achievement Program (MAP) from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. The MAP program provides grant funding to early-stage life sciences companies for the execution of essential milestones on the path to commercialization. Prapela is developing a non-pharmacological treatment for neonatal abstinence syndrome or NAS, a tragic outcome of the opioid epidemic.
In the United States, a baby is diagnosed with NAS every 15 minutes. Newborns with NAS often experience tremors, breathing problems, and hyperirritability as they withdraw from opioids they were exposed to during pregnancy. There is no standard treatment for NAS. Hospitals and long-term care organizations are seeking drug-free solutions for initial treatment and soothing babies at home after discharge.
Prapela is integrating stochastic vibrotactile stimulation or SVS into a hospital bassinet pad. SVS is a gentle, random vibration that is non-habit forming. In a published clinical trial, SVS improved breathing, heart rate, and relaxation in pharmacologically managed opioid-exposed newborns. "Our award will support efforts to obtain FDA clearance for our reusable hospital bassinet pad, " said John Konsin, Co-founder and CEO of Prapela, Inc. John continued, “Investment in pediatric innovation is so crucial for our children. We are incredibly grateful for this support from the Massachusetts Life Science Center.”
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) provided more than $1.9 million in funding to support ten early-stage life sciences companies in Massachusetts with the MAP program. Ten different organizations received the award on September 3. The awardees participate in many different areas of life sciences, including biopharma, medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health.
Located in Concord, Massachusetts, Prapela, Inc. is an infant health company focused on the application of SVS technology to improve infant health.
